Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

A deeper room to work in.

Rooted Presencia offers Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) for appropriate adult clients seeking a deeper or different approach to their therapeutic work.

KAP combines psychotherapy with medically supervised ketamine treatment. The goal is to create an intentional therapeutic experience that may help clients explore emotions, patterns, memories, and perspectives that can sometimes feel difficult to access through traditional talk therapy alone.

At Rooted Presencia, KAP is built around preparation, safety, therapeutic support, and integration. It is one part of a whole course of care, never a shortcut around it.

  • Psychotherapy by our clinicians
  • Medicine managed by an independent medical provider

01 — What KAP is

Therapy, with the medicine as a doorway.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy pairs ongoing psychotherapy with a prescribed medicine, given under medical supervision, in a planned and supported setting. The medicine is not the treatment on its own. The therapy is the treatment, and the medicine is used to open a window that talk alone sometimes cannot.

In practice that means you are not handed a prescription and sent home. You work with your therapist before the medicine experience to establish intentions and prepare, you receive therapeutic support during appropriate medicine sessions, and you take part in integration afterward, where the insights are explored and connected back to your ongoing therapeutic goals.

For some people this makes room for material that has stayed out of reach: a memory that will not settle, a pattern that keeps repeating, grief that has no words yet. For others, KAP is simply not the right tool, and we will say so.

02 — Who may benefit

Who this may be for.

KAP is considered for adults who are already in, or ready to begin, psychotherapy, and who are looking for a different way into work that has felt stuck. People often come to it when they have done meaningful therapy and something still will not move.

  • Treatment-resistant depression.Low mood that has not shifted enough with therapy, medication, or both.
  • Trauma and PTSD.Where talking about what happened keeps running into a wall, or the body will not let the work go further.
  • Grief and loss. When mourning has stalled, or when words have not been enough.
  • Anxiety and rigid patterns.Worry, avoidance, and ways of being that feel fixed no matter how well you understand them.
  • Existential and identity questions.Times of transition, meaning, and questions of culture, purpose, and self.

This is not a complete list, and being on it does not mean KAP is right for you. Eligibility is decided together, after a clinical assessment and medical screening.

03 — What to expect

The arc of KAP care.

KAP is a sequence, not a single appointment. Each stage has its own purpose, and each one is done with your therapist.

01 Consultation and assessment We start by understanding your history and whether KAP is a fit.

A KAP consultation and assessment covers your treatment history, what you have already tried, your goals, and your cultural context. We talk openly about risks, limits, and alternatives, and you get to ask everything you want to ask before deciding anything.

  • Clinical assessment with your therapist
  • Medical screening through an independent medical provider
  • A clear conversation about whether this is the right step now

02 Preparation Setting intentions and getting steady before the medicine session.

Preparation sessions come before any medicine. We talk about what you hope to move toward, what might come up, how you want to be supported in the room, and what will help you feel safe. We also plan the practical side: the day, the ride home, the quiet afterward.

  • Establishing intentions for the work
  • Grounding and nervous-system skills you can use during the session
  • Practical planning for the day of the session

03 Medicine sessions Supported sessions with therapeutic care present throughout.

Medicine sessions take place in a planned setting with therapeutic support. Ketamine is prescribed and managed by an independent medical provider, and your therapist provides the psychotherapy component. The room is quiet, the pace is yours, and nothing is expected of you except what you are able to do.

  • Supported medicine sessions with your therapist present
  • Medical oversight from an independent medical provider
  • Time afterward to settle before you leave

04 Integration Making meaning of what came up, and carrying it into your life.

Integration is where the work becomes yours. In the sessions after a medicine experience we explore what came up, what it connects to, and what it might change in how you live day to day. This is often the part that makes the difference.

  • Ongoing psychotherapy before and after KAP

04 — Two pathways

Two ways KAP can look.

Rooted Presencia may offer different pathways depending on your needs and medical eligibility. Which one fits is decided with you, not for you.

What's the difference between Journey Clinical and Joyous?

Two medical partners, two styles of KAP. The psychotherapy around the medicine is ours either way.

Journey Clinical and Joyous compared by approach, therapeutic experience, and care
Pathway Journey Clinical Joyous
Dose Higher-dose KAP Lower-dose psycholytic KAP
Therapeutic experience More immersive therapeutic experience Gradual therapeutic exploration
Medical care Medical evaluation and prescribing Medical evaluation and prescribing
Therapy Therapist preparation and integration Therapist preparation and integration
Planning Personalized treatment planning Personalized treatment planning

There isn't one better option

Each pathway offers unique benefits, and together we'll determine which approach is most appropriate for your needs.

05 — Safety and screening

Screened first, always.

KAP is not appropriate for everyone. Some medical and psychiatric conditions make ketamine unsafe, and some situations call for a different kind of care first. That is why every person goes through clinical and medical screening before treatment begins, and why we may say no.

Screening looks at your physical health, your medications, your psychiatric history, and your current support. Ketamine is prescribed and medically managed by an independent medical provider, and Rooted Presencia collaborates with appropriate medical partners when KAP is part of your treatment plan.

We will also be honest with you about what KAP is not. It is not a cure. It is not guaranteed to work. It is not a replacement for ongoing psychotherapy, and it is not something to pursue without a therapist who knows you.

06 — Fees and insurance

What KAP costs.

Psychotherapy

$150per 60-minute session

KAP preparation, medicine-session support, and integration are psychotherapy sessions and are billed at the standard session rate. Extended medicine sessions may be billed differently depending on length and pathway, and we will tell you the cost before you commit to anything.

Medicine and medical fees

Ketamine is prescribed and medically managed by an independent medical provider. Their fees for medical evaluation, prescribing, and oversight are separate from Rooted Presencia's psychotherapy fees, and are billed by that provider.

Insurance coverage for KAP varies widely. Some plans cover the psychotherapy portion and not the medicine or medical oversight; others cover neither. We will go through your benefits with you before you begin.

Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan. Please verify your benefits with your insurance carrier before beginning services.

07 — Questions

Questions people ask.

Is ketamine a cure for depression or trauma?

No. Ketamine is not a cure, and no responsible provider will promise you an outcome. What KAP can offer is a different opening for therapeutic work, which some people find useful and others do not. We will talk honestly with you about what to expect.

Do I need to already be a client here?

You can come to us specifically to ask about KAP. Either way, KAP at Rooted Presencia includes ongoing psychotherapy with us, because the therapy is the treatment and the medicine is used within it.

Who prescribes and manages the ketamine?

An independent medical provider. Rooted Presencia provides the psychotherapy component of treatment and collaborates with appropriate medical partners when KAP is part of your treatment plan. We do not prescribe or dispense ketamine ourselves.

How many sessions does KAP take?

There is no fixed number. It depends on your history, your goals, the pathway that fits you, and how you respond. Your therapist will talk with you about a plan and revisit it with you as you go.

Is it safe?

Ketamine is a controlled medicine with real risks, and it is not appropriate for everyone. That is why clinical and medical screening come first, and why medical oversight is part of every medicine session. We will not proceed if screening shows it is not safe for you.

Can I do KAP over telehealth?

Preparation and integration psychotherapy can happen by telehealth anywhere in New York State. Medicine sessions require an in-person setting with appropriate medical oversight. We will explain exactly what happens where before you begin.

Does insurance cover KAP?

Coverage varies widely by plan. Some plans cover the psychotherapy portion and not the medicine or medical oversight; others cover neither. We will go through your benefits with you before you begin, and you should verify with your carrier as well.

What if KAP is not right for me?

Then we say so, and we help you find what is. Rooted Presencia is a psychotherapy practice first. Most of the care we provide does not involve ketamine at all, and that care is just as serious.
